picked by Keown as one of only 5 centre backs in the Premier league that are playing well

We need to keep him if we can , but realise we have a budget that might not go to what he expects .

We have a good team let this not be another Rio fiasco.

Alex, sorry for having a pop. it's going to be hard to keep Reid and Song within our current wage structure so finding cheaper alternatives via the german, belgian or french leagues may be the best route

You're right I should have been more precise what I was comparing. The cumulative totals would always just favour players who've just played more. Even so, according to the OPTA stats Tomkins is ahead of him even on total interceptions despite playing 200 less minutes.

Re: Reid set to sign a new contract till 2019
I partly agree with Alex V , but not entirely.

Of course every player has their price & worth & defenders do not command the type of wages paid to a play maker & or goal scorers.

Before his injury last year & seeing him play I would have him in my team bar a handful of central defenders playing in this league currently.

However, his form dipped badly after his injury although generally he seems to be regaining form this year.

The standard of defending generally is average at best in the EPL & I look at Liverpool, Arsenal, Man U, Spurs & Everton's current C/B & put none of them above Reid on his top form. That's subjective of course but make him on his best form on a par with C/B at all those teams & better than many others within those teams that are currently playing.

Would Reid be a success at those clubs ? No one knows for sure & some players don't settle at some places. I can see many listed taking him on a free & he may or may not fit & settle in with them.

I say between 60k & 70k top whack for us to keep him & if that's not enough then good luck to him & we'd need to wave goodbye.

That said all very well saying get a couple of frees in to keep us going, but if it was that easy then Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Everton, Man U etc would do it tomorrow. At least two or three of those clubs have major issues with central defenders that I certainly wouldn't want to see playing at WH

I think you're confusing averages with totals for the season, Tomkins has only started six games and even with his one sub appearance added he's 30+ blocks/interceptions/clearances behind Reid

Re: Reid set to sign a new contract till 2019
Line up a good free transfer for next Summer, £30k wages, couple of million for the fees, boom I just saved the club ~£10m!

Seriously, it would be quite pathetic if in the next 10 months the club couldn't find a decent centre-back or two at a modest price and wage as alternatives to Reid if he goes.

Re: Reid set to sign a new contract till 2019
I think what people are forgetting with regards to how much we pay him you also have to factor in the cost to replace him witha new player ie:
How much they would cost sign?
How much would their wages be?
How much would their signing on fee be?
How much would agents fees be?

You have to think of the whole replacement fee and not just the wages versus wages.
Plus possibly how long would the player take to settle / would they settle / would they fulfill potential - all of those are massive unknowns versus what we know we already have?!

So we could be dominating more games with Reid in the side than Tomkins?

>>> commentator on bbc london at the weekend said reid was in the top three premier defenders this season for clearances/interceptions

Well they're wrong, and it's easy to check. Tomkins is ahead of him on both btw.

Obviously, teams that don't dominate games tend to have defenders with statistically more interceptions and clearances. So it's not a reliable indicator of anything really.

The best defender outside the top 4 or 6?

So none of those teams will need him then?

how does that work?

Just means he;s the best defender not currently at a top 6 club

doesn't mean he's not better than any of the ones they have

From what I have seen of the shite Man Utd have at centre-back they wouldn't go far wrong signing him.

From what Sullivan has said, its not down to money. If Reid wants to play European football, good luck to him. He's done well for us and its natural a player reaching his peak wants to test himself at the highest level he can.

If we manage to qualify for Europe this season then he may well sign. Sounds to me like the club have made an excellent offer.

Carragher and Neville on MNF regularily pick him out and call him the best defender outside the top 4 or 6

our "main" striker earns more than this
our "main" midfielder does also

I don't see it as an outrageous amount either CS

Re: Reid set to sign a new contract till 2019
He's one of our best players, so if we can afford it, pay him.

Saying we could get someone in as good for cheaper money is always a gamble, they might not want to sign, they might not settle.

A bird in the hand.....
